Dear Members,Re: Changes to I.S. 3218:2009 Fire Alarm Detection Systems
AECI have continually questioned the changes to the cable required for Fire Alarm Detection Systems in accordance with the New I.S. 3218:2009 (May 2009). This matter has been of major concern to the Members of our Association, to the Electrical Wholesalers and most of all to the Cable manufacturers.
Specifically the introduction of the requirements of cables to PH 120 has proved extremely difficult in many ways.
We have continually asked the NSAI why the cable required under the I.S 3218:2009 standard should be of such a higher grade than the UK’s BS 5839. The NSAI have recalled the I.S. 3218:2009 committee to investigate the situation regarding PH 120 cable.
A document has been forwarded to us relating to a proposed amendment on the section dealing with cables and it is our opinion that the NSAI will revert to the acceptance of PH 30 cable for normal Fire Alarm Detection Systems and a more enhanced cable (PH 120) for specific installations, i.e. Phased Evacuation, Buildings taller than 30 metres etc.
We will keep you informed as this issue unfolds.
